Drama at the Finch Feeder

Yesterday morning I glanced out the kitchen window as I made a cup of coffee, and noticed male and female purple finches eating at our finch feeder. I was not surprised, as a number of different birds dine here, including goldfinches, cardinals and nuthatches. We fill the feeder with black oil sunflower seeds, purchased in 20 lb. bags at Ace Hardware.

The male purple finch is especially beautiful.

You can see the almost iridescent red/purple of the feathers on his head in this photo.

All was calm until a goldfinch arrived on the scene. He did not look happy!

There was a brief kerfluffle of wings, and when the dust cleared . . .

So all is calm . . . for now.
